The ancient bird “Halcyon”
Feicui, the Chinese name of Jade, is originated from Halcyon, the male and female ancient birds with their feathers of blue, reddish-brown and green colors in ancient Chinese. As the colors of jade mainly develop from the kinds of color as Halcyon’s feather possessed, we therefore using Feicui, Halcyon’s Chinese name, as the name of “Jade” in Chinese.

Halcyon always came by pair thus people also called them “Happiness Bird”. They were beautiful pets and their feathers were used for making ornaments at that time. In Qing Dynasty, queens and concubines used Halcyon’s feather ornaments popularly at palace for decoration.
