If you want to phone your refrigerator and tell it to power up, or send a mobile message to your TV and begin recording, you may be a step closer as the global wave of "digital convergence" grows.

The Chinese government has approved a networked home appliance standard, which will take effect in August, as the nation joins the trend toward convergence in the electronics industry.

Li Li, secretary-general of ITopHome Appliance, said that the National Development and Reform Commission has approved a general standard for networked home appliances.

ITopHome Alliance is an industry group working under the Ministry of Information Industry to further integrate consumer electronics, computing and communications.

"With the addition of this new industrial standard, we have become the leader in establishing a home network standard in China," said Li Li.

As technology evolves, the world's electronics and communications industries, led by global forces like Intel, Sony, and Motorola, are attempting to establish standards to help everyday appliances communicate.

In China, home appliance giant Haier and computer maker Lenovo have initiated two working groups that aim to connect electronic devices at home or office into a unified network.

Haier's focus is on home appliances, while the Lenovo-led Intelligent Grouping and Resource Sharing Standard group is studying the computer interface.

Haier alone has released over 100 products meeting the standard, with more than 5,000 consumers now using the technology. "With a standard system ready, a key task for us is to promote it," said Li.

Last year, ITopHome Alliance grew by 50 new members, including the US network giant Cisco, for a total membership of more than 200.

South Korean heavyweight Samsung Electronics and semiconductor maker VIA Technologies are also interested in joining the alliance, she said.

Li noted that members of her alliance will launch over 500 products meeting the standard this year and Haier, which has one-fourth of the Chinese home appliance market, has already installed technical capabilities on its home appliances to interface with networks.
